Built for the way Byker and Walker homes were actually built

Legge Roofing is a North Tyneside based team, and Byker and Walker sit just across the Wallsend border from our yard in North Shields. We work on every kind of property the area has: Victorian Tyneside flats and terraces around Shields Road and the streets running down to the river, the interwar estates of Walker and Walkergate, and the post war semis and newer infill housing in between.

The east end's particular challenge is exposure and age. Many Byker roofs sit high on the bank above the Tyne and catch every westerly, while much of Walker's housing is now 80 to 100 years old, with original concrete tiles, tired felt and chimneys that have never been rebuilt. We specify materials and detailing to suit: matching slate or tile, lead in proper gauges, dry ridge and verge systems, and breathable membranes that actually breathe. Flat roof systems get the same treatment, EPDM and GRP over short-life felt on back offshoots, extensions and garages.

Why Byker and Walker homeowners and landlords choose Legge

The basics done properly: clear pricing, qualified people on the tools, and roofs that will still be doing their job in twenty years.

Materials matched to the street

Reclaimed slate, matching concrete tile patterns and code 4 and 5 lead, so repairs on a terrace or paired semi blend in with the houses either side.

Detailed surveys

We get on the roof, photograph the issues, and walk you through the findings. You'll see exactly what's wrong before any work or pricing is agreed.

Fixed written quotes

Itemised pricing covering scaffolding, materials, labour, and waste removal. No verbal-only estimates, no day-rate billing, no last-minute add-ons.

Backed by guarantees

Ten years on workmanship, plus the manufacturer warranty for slate, tile, EPDM, or fibreglass. Paperwork goes with the property if you sell.

What roofing in Byker and Walker actually looks like

Byker and Walker make up much of Newcastle's east end, running along the north bank of the Tyne between the Ouseburn and the Wallsend border. Shields Road is the main shopping street, the Byker Wall estate stands out on the skyline, and Walker Park and Walker Riverside give the area its green edge. Most homes here sit within a couple of miles of the city centre.

Roofing-wise, that gives us three distinct populations. Around Shields Road and the older streets of Byker, Victorian and Edwardian Tyneside flats and terraces with Welsh slate, shared chimney stacks and back lane access. Across Walker and Walkergate, interwar and post war semis and terraces with concrete tiles, hipped roofs and ridge and verge mortar that is often well past its best. Mixed in with both, newer infill housing and flats with relatively young roofs that mainly need maintenance.

Back lanes and steep streets are the local factors. Many rear roofs and offshoots are reached from the lane, and some Byker streets fall away sharply toward the river, so we plan scaffold carefully and arrange any council licence needed for scaffold on the street.

Before a storm, keep an eye on the Met Office weather warnings for the North East, and call us if you already know there is a problem with your roof.

Nine warning signs your Byker or Walker roof needs attention

The earlier you catch a roof problem, the smaller the bill. These are the signs we see most often on east end terraces, flats and semis.

Slates or tiles in the back lane

After a windy night, check the lane as well as the front. Slates or tiles sliding out in a row usually mean the original fixings have rusted through.

Damp on the chimney breast

Staining around an upstairs chimney breast usually points to cracked flaunchings or tired lead on a stack shared with next door.

Porous concrete tiles

Older concrete tiles lose their surface and start soaking up water. Once they stay dark long after the rain, they are near the end of their life.

Crumbling ridge and verge mortar

Mortar along the ridge and gable ends washes out first on exposed east end roofs. Dry ridge and verge systems stop it happening again.

Blistered felt on the offshoot

Felt over back kitchens, bathrooms and garages blisters, splits and holds water. A soft feel underfoot means the deck below is wet.

Blocked gutters and outlets

Moss washed off the tiles collects in gutters and outlets, so water spills over the fascia and soaks the walls.

Patch repairs that keep failing

Bitumen, sealant and odd tiles added over the years usually trap water instead of keeping it out. That is the time for a proper repair.

Moss on the shaded slopes

Moss holds water against slate and tile, and frost then cracks them from the inside, especially on north facing rear pitches.

Daylight in the loft

On a bright day, go into the loft with the lights off. Any daylight coming through the underside of the roof is a clear path for water.

Byker and Walker roofing FAQs

The questions we get asked most often by NE6 homeowners and landlords. If yours isn't here, ring us, we're happy to talk anything through.

How quickly can you get out to a Byker or Walker property? +

For non-urgent work, surveys, quotes and minor repairs, we typically have you booked in within the same working week. For active leaks or storm damage, we aim to make the property safe the same day or the following morning, then schedule the proper repair around you.

I own a Tyneside flat. Who pays for the roof? +

It depends on your lease or deeds. On many Byker Tyneside flats the roof sits over the upstairs flat, but repair costs are shared between the upper and lower owners. We're happy to quote both owners together, break the price down clearly, and give you photos so everyone can see what needs doing.

Should I repair my concrete tiles or replace the roof? +

If the tiles are sound but the ridge, verge or valleys are failing, a targeted repair is often enough. Once tiles are porous and cracked across several slopes, or the felt underneath has perished, a full re-roof is usually better value. We show you photos and tell you honestly which side of that line you are on.

What's involved in a full re-roof, and how disruptive is it? +

A typical re-roof on a Byker terrace or Walker semi takes 5 to 7 working days. We strip the existing covering, replace battens and underlay where needed, re-cover with new tiles or slate, renew lead flashings, and clean up daily as we go. Inside the property is unaffected apart from normal daytime noise.

Is EPDM rubber really better than felt for a flat roof? +

For a back offshoot or habitable extension, almost always yes. EPDM is fitted in a single sheet (no joins on most domestic-sized roofs), it flexes with temperature change rather than cracking, and it carries a 20-year manufacturer guarantee. Felt has its place, usually budget garage roofs, but on anything you live under, the upgrade is worthwhile.

Can you put scaffold up in a back lane or on a steep street? +

Yes. Most rear work is done from the back lane with a scaffold tower or a short run of scaffold, and we keep the lane passable for neighbours. On the steeper Byker streets we plan the scaffold around the slope, and we apply for any Newcastle City Council licence ourselves.

Do you work for landlords with more than one property? +

Yes. We look after rental properties across the east end, arrange access directly with tenants, and send photo reports before and after each job, so you don't need to be there.

Which surrounding areas do you cover? +

We cover the whole of Newcastle and North Tyneside. That includes Heaton, Jesmond, Wallsend, Benton, Longbenton, Gosforth and the coast. If you're nearby and unsure, send us your postcode and we'll let you know.
