Slate repairs
Slipped, cracked and missing slates replaced and fixed securely.
Natural slate is the traditional roof across much of the North East. We repair slate roofs, re-slate them when the time comes, and fit new slate roofs in Spanish and Welsh slate, installed to BS 5534.
A good slate roof can last for generations, but only if the slates are fixed, lapped and detailed correctly. Most slate roofs that fail do so because the nails rust through or the lead around chimneys and valleys wears out, not because the slate itself has gone. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, Historic England has useful guidance on looking after older slate roofs.
We look at the whole roof before recommending anything. Sometimes a repair is all you need. If the fixings have failed across the roof, we will explain why re-slating is the better long-term option and give you a written quote for both.

Slates slipping one by one usually means the nails have rusted. Widespread slipping points to re-slating.
Some slate flakes or splits with age. Individual slates can be replaced.
Water coming in along a valley or above a bay usually means the lead has split or worn thin.
Cracked mortar lets ridges move in high winds.
If a roof is covered in repair clips, the fixings have failed and repairs will keep coming.
Gaps you can see from inside are places water can get in.

Slate is the original roof on many of the Victorian and Edwardian terraces in North Shields, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, Jesmond and Gosforth. On the coast, salt air and wind are hard on fixings and lead, so we use materials chosen for coastal conditions.
If your home is in a conservation area, we will talk you through suitable slate and detailing before we quote.
