Built for the way Low Fell houses were actually built

Legge Roofing is a North Tyneside based team covering the whole of Tyneside, and Low Fell is one of our regular patches south of the river. We work on every kind of property the area has: the Victorian and Edwardian villas and terraces along and off Durham Road, the interwar semis of Chowdene, Lyndhurst and Harlow Green, and the newer family homes further south.

Low Fell's particular challenge is detail. Many of the older houses have sandstone chimneys, bay windows, dormers, decorative ridge tiles and original Welsh slate that deserve to be matched rather than replaced with something cheaper. We specify materials and detailing to suit: reclaimed or matching slate, lead in proper gauges for bays and valleys, and breathable membranes that actually breathe. Flat roof systems get the same treatment, EPDM and GRP over short-life felt on extensions, dormers and garages.

Why Low Fell homeowners and landlords choose Legge

The basics done properly: clear pricing, qualified people on the tools, and roofs that will still be doing their job in twenty years.

Period-matched materials

Reclaimed and new Welsh slate, code 4 and 5 lead, and the right mortar for sandstone stacks. The right components for Low Fell's Victorian and Edwardian houses.

Detailed surveys

We get on the roof, photograph the issues, and walk you through the findings. You'll see exactly what's wrong before any work or pricing is agreed.

Fixed written quotes

Itemised pricing covering scaffolding, materials, labour, and waste removal. No verbal-only estimates, no day-rate billing, no last-minute add-ons.

Backed by guarantees

Ten years on workmanship, plus the manufacturer warranty for slate, tile, EPDM, or fibreglass. Paperwork goes with the property if you sell.

What roofing in Low Fell actually looks like

Low Fell sits on the hill south of Gateshead town centre, around three miles from Newcastle, with Durham Road running through the middle as its main street of shops, cafes and bars. Saltwell Park is just to the north, and the housing spreads out from Durham Road into quiet residential streets on both sides.

Roofing-wise, that gives us three distinct populations. Along and off Durham Road, Victorian and Edwardian villas and terraces, many in sandstone, with Welsh slate, tall chimneys, bays and decorative ridge tiles. Around Chowdene, Lyndhurst and Harlow Green, 1920s and 1930s semis with clay or concrete tiles and lead valleys and bays reaching the end of their life. Further out, post war and modern family homes with younger roofs that mainly need maintenance.

The hill is the other local factor. Low Fell sits higher than much of Tyneside and catches the wind, so ridge, verge and chimney work tends to need doing sooner here, and we always check the stacks closely on period homes.

Before a storm, keep an eye on the Met Office weather warnings for the North East, and call us if you already know there is a problem with your roof.

Nine warning signs your Low Fell roof needs attention

The earlier you catch a roof problem, the smaller the bill. These are the signs we see most often on Low Fell's villas, terraces and semis.

Slipped slates on the front pitch

Original Welsh slates sliding out in a row usually mean the iron nails have rusted through. Check the path and the front garden after a windy night.

Eroded sandstone chimneys

Soft sandstone and old lime mortar wash out on the weather side, leaving pots loose and flaunchings cracked.

Leaking bay window roofs

Lead and tiled bay roofs on period houses leak where they meet the wall, and the stain usually shows above the bay inside.

Tired lead valleys

Old lead splits along its folds and lets water track under the slates, often showing as a stain on a bedroom ceiling.

Crumbling ridge and verge mortar

Exposed hill top roofs lose ridge and verge bedding first. Dry ridge and verge systems stop it happening again.

Dormer leaks

Water usually gets into dormers at the cheeks and aprons rather than through the flat top. Damp at the window reveals is the giveaway.

Blocked gutters

Leaves from the street trees fill gutters and outlets each autumn, so water spills over and soaks the walls.

Moss on rear slopes

Moss holds water against slate and tile, and frost then cracks them from the inside, especially on shaded rear pitches.

Daylight in the loft

On a bright day, go into the loft with the lights off. Any daylight coming through the underside of the roof is a clear path for water.

Low Fell roofing FAQs

The questions we get asked most often by NE9 homeowners and landlords. If yours isn't here, ring us, we're happy to talk anything through.

How quickly can you get out to a Low Fell property? +

For non-urgent work, surveys, quotes and minor repairs, we typically have you booked in within the same working week. For active leaks or storm damage, we aim to make the property safe the same day or the following morning, then schedule the proper repair around you.

Can you match the original Welsh slate on my house? +

Usually, yes. We keep reclaimed Welsh slate and can source new slate in matching sizes and colours, so repairs and re-roofs suit the house and the street.

Can you repair a sandstone chimney? +

Yes. We repoint sandstone stacks with a suitable mortar, replace damaged pots and flaunchings, and renew the lead flashings. Where stone has badly eroded we explain the options, including partial rebuilds, before quoting.

Is my property in a conservation area? +

Some parts of Gateshead are, and the rules can affect which materials you can use. We check for your address and flag anything that needs consent before we quote.

What's involved in a full re-roof, and how disruptive is it? +

A typical re-roof on a Low Fell terrace or semi takes 5 to 7 working days. We strip the existing covering, replace battens and underlay where needed, re-cover with new tiles or slate, renew lead flashings, and clean up daily as we go. Inside the property is unaffected apart from normal daytime noise.

Is EPDM rubber really better than felt for a flat roof? +

For a back offshoot or habitable extension, almost always yes. EPDM is fitted in a single sheet (no joins on most domestic-sized roofs), it flexes with temperature change rather than cracking, and it carries a 20-year manufacturer guarantee. Felt has its place, usually budget garage roofs, but on anything you live under, the upgrade is worthwhile.

Do you come south of the river for small repairs? +

Yes. Low Fell is a regular patch for us, so we're happy to come out for a slipped slate or a blocked gutter as well as bigger jobs.

Which surrounding areas do you cover? +

All of Gateshead, including Saltwell, Bensham, Sheriff Hill, Whickham, Dunston and Felling, plus Newcastle, South Tyneside and North Tyneside. If you're unsure, send us your postcode and we'll let you know.
